#NextUp Showcase

SCOTT DEPOT, Wv. -- With a night featuring 2 of the best programs in the nation, we were expecting a great game. We were not expecting the absolute instant classic that we got. Huntington Prep (WV) knocked off Hargrave Military Academy (VA) by a score of 118-115 in triple overtime during their exhibition game.

At the end of regulation, Hargrave’s Tavin Lovan hit 1 of 2 with 7.2 to go, followed by a Marvin Price layup at the other end to send it to the 1st overtime. Hargrave got out to a 106-101 lead in overtime but Marvin Price hit a another cold blooded shot, this time a 3 to tie up the game and force a 2nd overtime. Neither team could create separation in the 2nd overtime and so we headed to a 3rd overtime, tied 110-110. In the final frame, Hargrave’s final shot (a clean look by Connor Crabtree) wouldn’t fall and Huntington Prep came out on top after winning 3OT by a score of 8-5.

In the first game of the evening, Teays Valley Christian (WV) defeated Cross Lanes Christian (WV) by a score of 74-38.

As follows are some of the top performers from last night’s action at the Next Up Recruits Showcase:

Marvin Price – 2019 SG – Huntington Prep (WV)
Without Marvin’s big moments, Huntington Prep would not have won the game. He hit 2 huge shots to tie it late, in regulation and double overtime, and made scoring look easy throughout the night. The southpaw uses angles to get by his man and get to the rim, where he can finish or loves to draw the foul and head to the line.  He hit multiple 3s and scored at all 3 levels. He only has a few offers, and that should change rather quickly.

Tavin Lovan – 2018 G – Hargrave Military Academy (VA)
A standout guard from the state of Kentucky, Tavin looked like a grown man on the court last night. He is too strong and powerful for most opposing guards and finishes everything around the rim. When he does not have the ball in his hands, he is a very active defender and rebounds hard on the glass (averaging over 10 on the season), impacting the game in ways to win. In 2 games against national powerhouses Oak Hill Academy and Huntington Prep, Tavin is averaging 31 points and 14 rebounds. A high major player, no question.

Mason Shifflett – 2019 SG – Teays Valley Christian (WV)
Playing a lot more aggressively than we have seen in the past, Mason caught fire from deep multiple times throughout the game and his scoring was a big reason why Teays Valley ran away with the game. He has a nice stroke and knows how to move without the ball.

Sasha Sukhanov – 2018 C – Teays Valley Christian (WV)
The big fella was much more active on the defensive end than we have seen him in the past, blocking many shots throughout the evening against a smaller team. Sasha rebounded on the offensive glass and showed soft touch around the basket. Schools of all levels are calling about him and he recently took an unofficial visit to Morehead State.

Dale Hicks – 2018 F – Cross Lanes Christian (WV)
A kid we had no idea about heading into the game, Dale showed off a good skill level and scored in a variety of ways. He can step out and hit shots with his feet set, but also has soft touch in the paint and is a smart player.

Jules Moor – 2018 G – Hargrave Military Academy (VA) – Stony Brook commit
As the game went on, it became very clear that this guard looks like a great get for Jeff Boals and his staff at Stony Brook. The wiry guard scores the ball with ease and is confident in his ability to hit a shot or finish at the rim. He was second on the team in scoring last night with 23 and got really hot in the second half.

Trey McGowens – 2019 PG – Hargrave Military Academy (VA)
After electing to head to the 2019 class, Trey has seen offers come in from Kansas State, Clemson, NC State, St. John’s, and TCU. He is an explosive guard who can get to the rim and finish through contact or with authority. He got to the paint with ease all night, and set up teammates for easy looks. His jumpshot looks good but he is still looking for consistency from deep. When he finds it, watch out.

Jaemyn Brakefield – 2020 F – Huntington Prep (WV)
Already ranked as one of the top players in his class nationally, Jaemyn started slow but really got it going in the second half. He is very versatile offensively, as he can drive on slow defenders, post up smaller defenders, and step out and shoot 3s with his feet set. The lanky forward is very athletic and active on the glass. He is just scratching the surface of how good he is going to be.

Quinn Slazinski – 2019 F – Huntington Prep (WV)
Playing in a “point-forward” role for long stretches last night, Quinn got to show off his full offensive game. He pushed the ball on a defensive board and set up teammates for easy shots. The forward can finish around the hoop with soft touch, and shoot the ball with a nice jumper from deep. He can do a little bit of everything, and it’s easy to see why a variety of high major schools are recruiting him.

Jonathan Kuminga – 2021 F – Huntington Prep (WV)
Having proved himself as one of the top freshman in the country through the summer, Jonathan has settled in for his first year of high school. A high level athlete who is hard to stop from getting to the rim, he showed flashes of how special he can be with some strong drives to the rim for dunks. His combination of physical attributes

Connor Crabtree – 2018 G – Hargrave Military Academy (VA)
A smooth scoring guard, Connor can let it fly from deep and is a sniper. He is long and wiry, making him a tough cover offensively. He got to the rim and finished around the defense. A variety of low- and mid- major schools have offered, but it wouldn’t be a stretch to see him become a mid-major priority for schools on the East Coast.

Tre King - 2018 F - Hargrave Military Academy (VA)
In his first year on the post-grad squad after playing on Hargrave's high school team last year, Tre looks like he's going to make a big impact this season. The lanky forward runs the floor very well and hits the glass hard. King has good physical tools and is active on both ends of the floor.
