2018 G Mikal Dawson

HUNTINGTON, Wv. -- As far as good years go, 2018 Huntington (WV) G Mikal Dawson has had a great 2017 so far. During the high school season he established himself as one of the best players in the state of West Virginia on his way to a state championship run. During the AAU season, he picked up his first 3 offers and showed his ability as a tough and powerful wing.

During the high school season, he lead Huntington to a 18-5 record and their 6th state title in the last 13 years (3 of the last 4). Combined with his older brother John, the Dawson brothers became a force down the stretch and Mike turned it up to another level in the state tournament. With a 25 point, 10 rebound performance in the state title game, Mike showed how good he can be.

This big wing guard can get into the paint at will and uses his strength to finish around the basket. His ability to rebound from the wing and battle in the paint is the best part of his game. He thrives in big moments and is a true competitor on the court. Defensively, he hounds defenders from the moment they come across the half court line and can force turnovers. His jumpshot still needs some work, but it is very capable with range out to 3.

“I think my defense is what sets my game apart. Offensively, when I have the ball in my hands, I don’t think anyone can stop me from doing what I want.”

Dawson currently holds offers from Marshall, Bowling Green, and Youngstown State, with interest coming in from Akron and Duquesne. He is hoping to make it to Bowling Green and Youngstown State for visits sometime in September. With another strong senior season, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see more schools jump into the mix for this talented player.

For now, however, Mike will finish up his senior season on the gridiron. He has great athleticism and is a very hard cover at receiver, where he is getting Division 1 interest as well.
