2021 Jonathan Kuminga

HUNTINGTON, Wv. -- One of the most intriguing players in attendence, 2021 Huntington Prep (WV) F Jonathan Kuminga came onto the scene at our camp this past July. This young and athletic wing made his presence known as soon as he stepped onto the court, showing off high level athleticism and a feel for the game not typically seen in a player that young.

He isn’t a full fledged wing yet, but can attack the defense from the perimeter and finishes at a high percentage around the rim. He is explosive in transition and has a capable jumpshot from 3. His physical tools give him the potential to be a lockdown defender down the road. This athletic wing has huge upside.

When we got the chance to see him again in July with an extremely talented New York Jayhawks 15u team and it was clear immediately that Jonathan was the best athlete on the floor, even playing up an age group.  He often gets highlight reel dunks, and is comfortable playing on the perimeter or in the paint.

Prophet Kates, one of the directors of the NY Jayhawks and a coach in the program, had this to say about the young swingman: “Jonathan is special. He is best in the open floor where he can showcase his one-on-one ability to blow by defenders. Heading to Iona Prep in the fall, he should blow up and become one of the top players in his class. It's only the beginning for this young man and the future is bright for him.”

Recently, Iona has become the first school to offer him a scholarship and many more schools will offer in the future. Kuminga projects as one of the best players in his class nationally and one day may have a chance to one day have his pick of any school in the country.
