DAYTON, Ohio -- Of the events across the country that we have to hit every year, Flyin’ to the Hoop is near the top of the list. Taking place in basketball-crazy Dayton, Ohio, this event is one of the premier ones in the Midwest. It’s very common for each day of the event to reach standing room only at some point and the crowd to absolutely go nuts for a couple plays a day. Featuring most of the best players in Ohio and some great out of state teams, this event is really fun.

As follows are some of the top performers we saw this weekend:

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander – 2017 PG - Hamilton Heights (TN)
– Kentucky signee
While he didn’t get the win against a loaded IMG, Shai was really good on Friday night. He absolutely looks the part of a great prospect and his combination of skill and long term upside was impressive. He got to the rim off the bounce and created separation to hit jumpshots in the mid range. He may be ready to contribute immediately at Kentucky, but after a year in John Calipari’s system he has a chance to be really good.

Kyle Young – 2017 SF – Massillon Jackson (OH) – Butler Signee
One of the best scorers in Ohio, Kyle did not disappoint on Saturday. The Butler-bound senior showed off his entire arsenal; he dropped in triples from deep, scored in transition, and got buckets at the rim. Everything he did on Saturday was effortless and he looks like a really good get for Butler, where he will likely remind fans of Gordon Hayward.

Chase Johnson – 2017 F – Huntington Prep (WV) – Florida Signee
We’ve been high on the big man out of Ripley, WV for a long time, but with Huntington Prep he’s taken his game to another level. He was awesome on Saturday night, playing hard and finishing in the paint while also showing the ability to pass out of the high post. Over the past year he’s really bought into being a high energy, tough big man and its working. Chase finished with an impressive stat line of 19 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 assists in a blowout win Friday.  Saturday, he showed how good of a player Florida is getting, scoring a team high 17 points against Prolific Prep’s talented big men.

Trevon Duval – 2017 PG – IMG Academy (FL)
This was the fourth event we have gotten to see Trevon in so far this season and the first thing you see is how easy the game comes to him. He gets into the paint at will where he finishes at a high level around or sets up a teammate for an easy bucket. The next step in his game is to improve his outside shot, but it looked better this weekend, hitting 2 3s on Friday. After Matt Coleman’s commitment to Texas, it looks like Duke will put the full court press on for him, trying to beat Baylor, Arizona, Kansas, and Seton Hall.

Jerome Hunter – 2018 F – Pickerington North (OH)
Motor has always been a big issue for Jerome, but now it seems like a thing of the past. The talented forward was excellent on Sunday, playing extremely hard and showing off his full scoring arsenal. Multiple times throughout the game, he intentionally missed a shot just to use his insane second jump and finish an easier shot. Based on his performance Sunday (29 points, 18 rebounds), we wouldn’t be surprised to see him end up as the top 2018 in Ohio and a top 50 player nationally.

Jayvon Graves – 2017 G – St. Vincent-St. Mary (OH) – Buffalo signee
An excellent mid-major pickup, Jayvon was killing for St. V against Pick North. He was his usual highlight reel self in transition, as he had a off the glass dunk in transition, but also attacked the basket in the halfcourt. He was the reason his team won, finishing with 27 points. The athletic guard has the tools to be a versatile defender in college and should provide some memorable dunks during his time at Buffalo.

Dane Goodwin – 2018 SG – Upper Arlington (OH) – Ohio State commit
In his first appearance at Flyin to the Hoop, Dane was sensational. He has great feel for the game and rarely takes a bad shot. When he originally committed to Ohio State as a freshman, he was known as just a shooter. Now, Dane is a complete scorer with the great range to boot. He dropped in shots from everywhere on the court, attacked the basket, and converted at the free throw line. He finished with 34 points, which was more than the entire team he played against scored. OSU got a good one.

Gary Trent Jr. – 2017 SG – Prolific Prep (CA) - Duke Signee
Armed with maybe the best scoring arsenal of any player in the country, Gary came into Dayton and got buckets. He was unconscious for the first 3 quarters against Huntington Prep before cooling off and finishing with 33 in a tight loss. He then came out and got even more buckets against Trotwood-Madison as he finished with 36. He can score any way imaginable.

Keldon Johnson – 2018 SG/SF – Huntington Prep (WV)
One half of Johnson & Johnson (Huntington Prep’s Chase and Keldon), Keldon and his partner in crime were great this weekend. Keldon took the game over down the stretch in their game against undefeated Prolific Prep. He is a versatile scoring threat who can make tough shots in the mid-range, finish at the rim, or knockdown shots from deep. In a great matchup with Gary Trent Jr, the 2018 swingman showed he can hang with any player put across from him.
