SCOTT DEPOT, WV. - We spent our Saturday at the West Virginia-Virginia Border War hosted by Teays Valley Christian School and featuring 4 of the top prep programs in the area. Game 1 featured Teays Valley (WV) vs The Miller School (VA) while game 2 was a 40-minute exhibition game between Huntington Prep (WV) and Hargrave Military Academy (VA). This is the 4th year in a row these teams have played a 40-minute exhibition, with Hargrave prevailing 111-103 in 2016, Huntington Prep taking a 3OT thriller 118-115 in 2017, and Hargrave taking the 2018 meeting by a score of 113-96.

This was a great way to kick off the high school season, featuring 2 high level games with a variety of prospects at all levels. Both games followed similar scripts, with the Virginia squads jumping out to big halftime leads before the West Virginia squads made big 2nd half rallies. All in all, the games were high level and the atmosphere was everything you could want for games in mid-November.

Game 2: Hargrave Military Academy (VA) defeats Huntington Prep (WV) 93-86 in a 40-minute exhibition game

Chrishawn Christmas – 2021 F – Teays Valley Christian (WV)
After a so-so first half, Chrishawn did his thing in the second half and the 2 overtime periods, helping to lead his team to a huge comeback victory. His calling card is his versatility on defense and it showed tonight. The swingman can guard 2-4 on defense, block shots around the rim, and use his length to create turnovers. At times, he struggles to create in the halfcourt, but is a capable shooter with his feet set, and can use his athleticism to score off the bounce. He hit the biggest shot of the night, a banked in 3 with 5 seconds left to force overtime, for his team and had a great all-around game.

David Jones – 2021 G – Teays Valley Christian (WV)
Despite not having the best night shooting the ball, the lefty swingman still made his presence felt as a scorer tonight. He is a relentless driver, attacking the defense constantly and often getting his own misses on the offensive glass when he does miss. He is a streaky outside shooter but has supreme confidence in his scoring ability. David had some timely buckets in the 2nd half to help his team complete the comeback and force OT, and is a player who will get recruited at the mid- to high-major level over the next 18 months.

Quadir Pettaway – 2021 G – The Miller School (VA)
He had a very up-and-down game, but make no questions about it, Quadir is a flat out bucket getter. He pumped in 14 points during a 5-minute stretch in the 2nd quarter and showed off how lethal of a scorer he is. Pettaway is a knockdown outside shooter, but can also score driving into the paint. He is one of the best guards in Virginia’s 2021 class and holds a variety of regional offers.

Amir Nesbitt – 2020 G – The Miller School (VA)
The best player on the floor tonight for the Miller School, Amir was a warrior. He does so much right on the court. The stocky guard got to the rim off the bounce and finished in a variety of ways – floaters, through contact, at the rim, and knocked down shots from the perimeter like we have not seen from him in the past. When his team was cold in the 2nd half, he kicked his game into a higher gear. He’s been offered by variety of low-major schools, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see more schools vie for his services with a strong senior season.

KD Johnson – 2020 PG – Hargrave Military Academy (VA) – Georgia Signee
We were simply blown away by how good KD Johnson looked tonight against a very legit Huntington Prep squad. There were quite a few stretches of the 40-minute exhibition where KD was the best player on the floor, finishing with a team-high 26 points. Tonight, he was raining in 3s, scoring off the bounce, creating turnovers on defense, getting teammates involved, and controlling the pace of the game. Sitting at #144 in the 247 Sports Composite Rankings, we feel the tough point guard is under appreciated on the national scale and someone who has a high chance to outperform their ranking. He is a very good fit for how Tom Crean likes to use his guards and someone we think Georgia fans will come to love during his college career.

Corey Walker – 2020 F – Hargrave Military Academy (VA) – Tennessee Signee
Another player walking into a perfect fit at Tennessee, Corey Walker showed his versatility on both ends of the floor tonight. Defensively, he switched onto perimeter players effectively, blocked shots at the rim in the half-court and multiple times in 2 on 1 situations in transition, and was a beast on the glass. Offensively, he stepped out and hit 3s, scored on the offensive glass, and finished passes from his teammates in the paint. He does a lot of great things on the court, and should thrive as a mismatch forward in the SEC.

Bryson Childress – 2020 G – Hargrave Military Academy (VA)
The Hargrave staff told us to watch out for this small guard prior to the game and we were not disappointed. Despite being the smallest player to take the court for any of the 4 teams tonight, Childress is an absolute sniper that cannot be left open on the perimeter. It was hard for our staff to not see a smaller version of current JMU freshman Quinn Richey, who had a great prep career as a HS player in Georgia. Low-major schools looking for a shooter need to take a good hard look at this player.

Jaemyn Brakefield – 2020 F – Huntington Prep (WV) – Duke Signee
We’ve written about Jaemyn a lot over the years, and his game/style hasn’t changed much. However, he’s consistently gotten better and refined his game. He is a walking mismatch, able to take slower guys off the bounce, shoot over you, and score around the rim. He had all parts of his game working tonight, scoring 14 points (and it would’ve been more had teammate AJ Hoggard not went nuclear in the 2nd half) against a stingy Hargrave defense.

Brayon Freeman – 2021 PG – Huntington Prep (WV)
In the past, there have been some Huntington Prep teams have lacked a true point guard but this year they will not have that issue. Coming over from a great Paul VI (VA) program in the WCAC, Freeman fit in with his new teammates perfectly. He is a shifty guard that can get into the paint, seemingly at will, and also has the ability to knock down shots from the perimeter. Brayon sets up teammates for easy looks and while he can play too fast at times, is a high-level point guard prospect.

AJ Hoggard – 2020 G – Huntington Prep (WV) – Michigan State signee
After scoring just 1 point in the 1st half, Hoggard came alive in the 2nd, going off for 30 points and bringing him team back from a large halftime deficit and keeping them in the game until the very end. He finished with 31 points on a variety of floaters, finishes at the hoop, and outside shots, showing why he’s considered one of the best combo guards in the nation. He’s got a complete scoring package and when he’s attacking off the bounce, he’s both shifty and strong therefore making it hard to stop him from getting where he wants to go.
