GEORGETOWN, Ky. -- Scott County High School has produced multiple Division 1 players in the era of Head Coach Billy Hicks. In 1999, Hicks had a player by the name of A.W. Hamilton, who went on to be one of the best point guards to ever put on a Marshall uniform. 20 years later, two of Hicks’ former players reconnect. 2019 6’7 F Michael Moreno signed with Eastern Kentucky University today to play for none other than Coach A.W. Hamilton.

“I felt like EKU would allow me to thrive both on and off the court.  I won’t be too far from home and that played a factor because my family is so important to me.  The entire coaching staff is amazing and I think they are great dudes. The 2019 class that coach brought in is loaded and I can’t wait to get on campus and get to work”, said Moreno.

The Scott County star is an amazing kid on the court and in the classroom, which he showed by earning a 4.0 GPA and a 28 on the ACT.  On the court is where he is most passionate and well decorated with a long list of accolades. Some of those include being named All-State, All-Region, All-Districts, and a Varsity starter for 4 years. The All-time leading rebounder (1317), single season rebound record (422), and scored 2383 total points in his career (57% FG / 38.8% 3 Point).

At 6’7, Moreno is a versatile Forward that can be effective inside and out on both ends up the floor.  He is a dominant post player with great hands and touch. His jump shot is pure and knocks down shots consistently from mid-range out to three. Rebounding is a strong part of his game and he grabs anything in his area. He is a high IQ player that doesn’t force any shots and passes well from the post. He can grab a board and lead a break in transition, which will come in handy with coach Hamilton’s high tempo offense.

I asked Coach Hamilton about Moreno and he had this to say, “Michael is one the most well rounded players in our 2019 recruiting class. He has great size and strength to go along with his basketball IQ which is well beyond his years. Michael checks all the boxes we want in terms of recruiting a complete student-athlete. He has been a tremendous asset to the community in Georgetown for years and will certainly continue that here in Richmond. As a Scott County graduate, I’m most proud of his accomplishments in the classroom and can’t wait to start working with him. Michael has always been a winner and having played for one of the best high school coaches in the country, Coach Hicks, I’m confident his maturity and winning ways will translate to the OVC”.

This young man is talented and has always felt like he has been under the radar and slept on. Now is his time to prove it. He will have a chip on his shoulder and try to be a top player in the Ohio Valley Conference.
