LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Overall, the 1st annual Next Up Recruits Unsigned Senior showcase had to be considered a success. 80 kids from all over had the chance to play in front of 28 different schools for the opportunity to earn a scholarship. We split 80 kids into 2 sessions at Fern Creek High School in Louisville, KY and every kid had the opportunity to play for a college scholarship.

Below are some of the kids who stood out to us and coaches we spoke to throughout the day:

Chris West Jr – Washington Academy (NC)

A native of Louisville, Chris had played his senior season at Washington Academy in NC and truly developed his game. He has the ability to play on/off the ball. He rebounds great for his size and can shoot the 3. What really stands out is his great pace and feel for the game. He left as one of the best prospects during his session.

Tyrik Edwards – Christian County (KY)

Christian County was one of the state’s best teams all season and part of what made them go was Tyrik. This small scoring guard hit tough shots throughout the session and showed his explosiveness. He can change speeds and can hit shots from all over the floor as well. Coaches were buzzing about him.

DeAndre Dishman – Bryan Station (KY)

Hands down the most impressive player in the gym, DeAndre finally looked like his normal self after being injured for most of his senior season. Although he was not quite 100%, he showed that he is an explosive athlete while finishing above the rim. He has developed his jumpshot to 15 feet without consistency and hit a few during the day. His potential is huge and almost every coach in the gym wanted to talk to him following a big day.

Brian Alvey – Louisville Ballard (KY)

During his second game of the day, Brian absolutely caught fire. He was hitting tough contested shots and finished in transition. He was scoring with ease while playing on and off the ball. After being overshadowed at Louisville Ballard by other guards, Brian balled out.

Art Walker – Montgomery County (KY)

Art is a shooter and not much else, but that’s not to say he wasn’t extremely impressive. He has a high basketball IQ and understands how to get open while playing off the ball. He is knockdown from deep and has a quick release on his jumpshot. During the last game of the day, he hit 5 3s in about 9 minutes of action, showing his ability to let it fly.

Caleb Taylor – South Laurel (KY)

Caleb has been on our radar for a long time but he took it to another level during the state tournament and carried that over into camp. He is an absolute monster on the block who never loses his position or his composure. His IQ is high as he understands how to seal and score and knows where to establish postion. Shot blocking is also a quality trait that he brings to the court along with being an excellent passer out of the post.  

Matt Miller – John Hardin (KY)

Matt has been on D1 radars since his play last summer with the Kentucky Travelers in AAU and coming off a strong senior season, he earned a ton of offers at camp. He understands how to penetrate the paint and make plays for his teammates. His floater is deadly and his jumpshot is coming along as well. Was undoubtedly one of the top players of session 2.

Glenn Hill – Southern (KY)

Glenn was one of the biggest surprises of the day, a player who we had not seen much of during his HS career. He is a long guard who scores the ball and finishes in the paint. While he might not wow, he had a great performance and never looked out of place.

Andrew Griffith – South Laurel (KY)

Another South Laurel product, Andrew really got going during the second half of session 2. He is a hybrid forward who finished a ton of tough takes inside off the bounce. He is not a great shooter but can create for himself in the post or off the dribble. He is long and moves extremely well, can defend multiple positions, and passes the ball well. We would not be surprised to see a good school swoop in late and snatch this kid.

CJ Mastin – Butler (AL)

A last minute addition to camp, CJ came and finished as one of the most impressive kids in camp. He read the defense and drew multiple defenders throughout the session. He finds the open man, has a great handle, and knows how to read the defense. His ability to get into the paint at will was crucial and he was a great on-ball defender.

Malik Frank – Frankfort High (KY)

Malik showed up at camp coming off a big individual senior year including a game that he recorded 45 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 assists. He finished going to the hoop and was tough going into the paint. He can post up smaller guards and drive on bigger ones, but can also make plays for others. This kid has a chance to be a steal wherever he lands.

Roland Butler – Christian County (KY)

While he might not have stood out as a dominant scorer, he was certainly consistent throughout the day. Roland is a tough guard who can penetrate the defense and finish through contact. He got to the rim while also making plays for others.

Darrell Domineck – Hughes (OH)

The final sign up for camp was one we were glad came. This big fella is a beat in the paint and can bang with anyone. He knows how to use his body to carve out space and has a super soft touch with both hands. He can stretch the floor a little bit with his jumpshot wide bodied, space eater, finished inside, soft touch, monster rebounder, can hit short jump shots, 

Abdulla Yusuf – Fern Creek (KY)

For a kid who, in the word of his HS coach, has only been playing basketball for a year Abdulla was quite impressive. He finished inside while showing off his soft touch in the paint. He hit a couple tough hooks over left shoulder and ran the floor well. He is still a lot of potential but we liked the flashes we saw the big fella show during session 1.

Darius Williams – Dunbar (KY)

Coming off a state championship run in Kentucky, Darius brought his A-game to camp and scored at will. He showed off the total package: scoring at the rim and knocking down deep jumpers. He has developed a knack for rebounding out of his area and using his strong frame to his advantage on both ends of the court.
