NEW YORK CITY, Ny. -- Sidney Wilson is a 6’6 forward who is a four-star junior prospect according to ESPN. He is currently playing for St. Raymond High School located in Bronx, NY. This season he is averaging 17.5PPG along with 7RPG. He is getting a lot of attention from high-major schools and I recently got to speak with him over the phone. Here is what he had to say…
NUR: How long have you been at St. Raymond High School and how is the school treating you?
Wilson: I’ve been there since my freshman year and I am currently a junior now. It’s a great school because it is a family orientated place. From the entire coaching staff to the teachers… it’s a family orientated environment. The coaches have made me better overall because I am more of a versatile player now. They all push me to get better everyday.
NUR: What is your relationship like between your coaches and your teammates?
Wilson: I’m very close with all of the coaches because aside from basketball, we just talk on a daily basis. I call them to hangout and to just talk about life in general. Actually, my head coach is my teacher so he makes sure that I am doing well academically.
NUR: For someone that may not know how you play, how would you describe your game and what are some things you want to improve on?
Wilson: I play with a lot of passion. I’m an athletic/high-motor player who plays close to the rim. I can post-up on anybody and I’m also pretty quick for my size. I am able to protect the paint by blocking shots. Some things I want to work on are my ball handling and my outside shooting needs improvement as well.
NUR: When it comes to recruiting, what schools have offered you and what schools are interested in you?
Wilson: The schools that have offered are Cincinnati, Rutgers, Indiana, VCU, and Providence. I have a lot of interest from St. John’s, Seton Hall, Syracuse, Florida, and New Mexico.
NUR: What are some of your thoughts on St. John’s?
Wilson: Chris Mullin is a great guy. When I took a visit to the school, I spoke with him about the NBA. When I went to some of the games, I noticed how the program pushes the ball and that is something I look into.
NUR: When you’re about to make your final decision, what are some factors that you are going to look into?
Wilson: I am going to look into a program that is family orientated because that feeling through high school has surrounded me so far. When it comes to a coach, I like a coach that is challenging because he will motivate me to become a better overall player. Also, I will look at if the program will get me ready to play at the next level. The school’s academic standards will play a role when I make my decision as well.
NUR: Who are some players in the NBA that you try to model your game after?
Wilson: I like players like Kevin Durant, Paul George, Carmelo Anthony, and LeBron James. I look at small guards such as Russell Westbrook and how aggressive he plays. I also like Dirk Nowitzki because he has post moves down low and his ability to shoot over people.
